Now is the time to think about hot tubs

Cold weather is the perfect time to start thinking about hot tubs. The health benefits alone make the purchase worthwhile. Stress relief and easing sore muscles are just a few of the benefits. There are few things to consider though, before purchasing one.

Water weighs eight pounds per gallon, so the tubs will be heavy. The heavy tubs may require structural changes to raised decking, for example, addition support posts. The larger tubs can weigh in excess of 2500 pounds. The deck or platform must be strong enough to support the weight.

Electrical requirements must be considered, as well. The vast majority of hot tubs will require their own dedicated control box. Many state and local code regulations require a shut off switch be within 15 feet of the appliance. The tub will require its own dedicated breaker and wiring. The wiring will be heavier gauge than standard household cable. Homeowners should contact a licensed electrical contractor for all code requirements.

There is of course weekly and many times daily maintenance associated with a hot tub. There are sanitizing chemicals that are designed specifically for tubs. The water must be tested prior to anyone entering the water. The water temperature can be anywhere from 80 to 104 degrees Fahrenheit. Warm water will breed more bacteria than cold water. The sanitizer must be applied correctly to maintain the proper level.
